Sensex Today: Ends 143 Points Lower at 73,709 as IT Jumps 2.9% and Smallcaps Fall 2.4%

But the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 2.37%, with 91 of its 100 stocks lower, while IT shares jumped almost 3%.

Sensex figures are from BSE’s index page; all others are from NSE’s index data timestamped 21 October, 3:30 PM. Within the Nifty 50, only 16 stocks rose and 34 fell.
A big swing inside the day
The Sensex opened at 74,337.93, touched a high of 74,682.19 and a low of 73,229.45, per BSE. That is a range of about 1,453 points in one session. Media reports said the index was down about 580 points at 3 PM, so it recovered roughly 437 points in the last half hour. A late recovery like that often comes from short-covering or a few heavyweight stocks, not a broad change in mood.
Over two sessions, the picture is weaker. From Friday’s close of about 74,729, the Sensex is down about 1,020 points (1.36%). The Nifty is down about 335 points (1.45%) from 23,146.15 on 16 October. Our 16 October Nifty report has that starting point.
IT stocks led the gains
Nifty IT was the only major sector index in the green with real strength: all 10 of its stocks rose. On the Sensex, the top gainers per BSE were HCL Technologies (+3.40%), Infosys (+3.31%), Tech Mahindra (+3.21%) and TCS (+2.68%). IT companies earn mostly in dollars, so a weaker rupee and steady US demand help their earnings. They had also fallen on Monday, so part of today’s rise was a rebound.
Where the selling was
- Bajaj Finance was the biggest Sensex loser, down 3.33% to ₹925.10, after its quarterly results flagged a rise in overdue gold loans. We cover the results in a separate report in this batch.
- Consumer and auto names: Eternal (−2.71%), Trent (−2.32%) and Maruti Suzuki (−1.94%) fell. Nifty Auto lost 1.54%, with all 15 stocks lower.
- Banks: Axis Bank fell another 2.11% and Kotak Mahindra Bank 1.38%. Nifty Bank lost 0.92%, and even the PSU Bank index, which had rallied on Monday, slipped 0.51%.
- Metals and realty: Nifty Metal fell 1.71% and Nifty Realty 1.25%.
The weakness in smaller companies was the standout. A 2.37% fall in the Smallcap 100 on a day when the Nifty fell only 0.34% shows investors trimming riskier holdings first.
Why the market is nervous
Three things are weighing on sentiment:
- Rates. RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on 7 October and changed its stance to “calibrated tightening”. The minutes of that meeting, released this evening, say rate cuts are “off the table in the near term”. Higher rates make borrowing costlier for companies and households.
- Oil and global yields. Crude has stayed above $100 a barrel, and global bond yields are high, which tends to pull foreign money away from emerging markets.
- The Jio Platforms IPO. The ₹30,213 crore issue opened today. Investors raising money to apply may have sold other shares. Our Jio IPO guide has the dates and price band.
India VIX, the volatility index, rose 6.29% to 15.70. That is still not a panic level, but it is the highest in recent sessions and signals that traders expect bigger moves ahead.
Sensex today: top gainers and losers
| Top gainers | Change | Top losers | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| HCL Technologies | +3.40% | Bajaj Finance | −3.33% |
| Infosys | +3.31% | Eternal | −2.71% |
| Tech Mahindra | +3.21% | Trent | −2.32% |
| TCS | +2.68% | Axis Bank | −2.11% |
| UltraTech Cement | +1.80% | NTPC | −1.99% |
Source: BSE’s Sensex constituent list at the close. Reliance Industries, the heaviest Sensex stock, rose 0.37%; HDFC Bank fell 0.73% and ICICI Bank rose 0.22%. With the two biggest banks nearly flat, the IT rally was enough to keep the index losses small.
What to watch on Thursday
- Jio IPO day 2. Retail demand was below the shares on offer on day one. How bidding goes on Thursday will show how much money is being pulled into the issue.
- More quarterly results. Several large companies report this week. Bank and NBFC results have moved stocks sharply, as Bajaj Finance showed today.
- Liquidity. RBI has announced another overnight repo auction of ₹50,000 crore for Thursday morning, which signals it is managing short-term cash in the banking system closely.
- Global cues. Oil prices and US bond yields overnight will set the tone at the open.
When the Sensex today and the Nifty move this little while small caps fall this much, it is usually a sign of selective selling rather than a broad sell-off. Watch whether the small-cap weakness spreads to larger stocks in the next few sessions.
What it means for your money
If you invest through SIPs in large-cap or index funds, a 0.2–0.3% dip needs no action. If you hold small-cap funds, expect sharper swings; the category has fallen faster than the Nifty in this phase. That is normal for small caps and is why advisers suggest holding them only with a long horizon, five years or more.
If you were planning to sell stocks to apply for the Jio IPO, remember that sale proceeds take a day to settle. Keep enough balance in the bank account linked to your UPI mandate.
Foreign investors have been mostly net sellers this month, as we noted in our report on FPI selling. Provisional figures for today were not available when we checked.
