Aadhaar Name Change Rules: UIDAI’s New SOP Says Name Must Match Your Document Exactly
UIDAI has issued a new Standard Operating Procedure for updating names in Aadhaar. The SOP was signed on 18 September 2026 by Nikhil Sinha, Director, under file number HQ-16024/4/2020-EU-I-HQ, and took effect from that date. It replaces the 28 October 2021 SOP on name and gender updates under exception handling. The key rule is in bold in the document itself: “The name shall be updated as per the spelling, sequence, abbreviation etc. mentioned in the submitted document.” The SOP drew wider attention on 5–6 October, after media reports on the stricter Aadhaar name change rules.
The SOP refers to Regulation 19 and Schedule II of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, which list the documents accepted for updates.
Aadhaar name change rules: what the SOP now requires
The SOP sets formatting rules first, and then a document rule for each type of change.
- Format (para 2): names are entered in block letters. No alias or “urf”, no prefixes or ranks such as Dr, Col or Shri, and no dots or special characters.
- Exact match (para 3): spelling, order and abbreviations follow the document you submit. If your PoI document reads “R K SHARMA”, the update will read the same way, not “RAJESH KUMAR SHARMA”.
- Major changes (para 5): a request that changes the name substantially is “liable to be rejected, if not accompanied by a Gazette Notification”.
- Verification (para 6): the documents you submit are checked before the update is approved.
Which document for which change
Annexure A of the SOP matches each kind of name change to the documents needed. We grouped the 15 cases below.
| Type of change (Annexure A item) | Documents required |
|---|---|
| Minor’s name: spelling, sequence, full name and similar (a)–(e) | Proof of Identity (PoI), or Proof of Relationship (PoR) for Head-of-Family updates of children under 18 |
| Data-entry error at enrolment (f) | Adults: affidavit in Annexure B + PoI/PoR. Minors: Annexure C |
| Error in the regional-language name (g) | PoI |
| Woman’s surname after marriage or divorce (h) | Annexure D + PoI |
| Name change after a gender change (i) | Applicable PoI |
| Replacing “Baby of …” with the child’s name (j) | PoR |
| Dropping ranks or prefixes (k) | PoI |
| Fixing random capital letters (l) or removing dots (m) | No document required |
| Removing “urf” or an alias (n) | Adults: Annexure E + PoI. Minors: Annexure F + PoI/PoR |
| Major change of name (o) | PoI; for a change of name itself, only a Gazette Notification |
One family, two cases
Take a married woman whose Aadhaar shows her maiden surname, and whose son’s Aadhaar still reads “BABY OF” with her name. Her update falls under item (h): an Annexure D declaration plus a PoI that already shows the new surname, such as a passport, a PAN card in the new name, or another document listed in Schedule II. The son’s update falls under item (j) and needs a PoR, typically a birth certificate that names the child. The order matters. If her PoI still shows the maiden name, the SOP’s exact-match rule means the update will follow that document.
Why this matters for your bank and PAN records
Banks and the income-tax portal match names across Aadhaar, PAN and account records. Under the new Aadhaar name change rules, the Aadhaar entry will mirror the document you submit, initials included. If PAN shows “RAJESH KUMAR SHARMA” and you update Aadhaar using a document that reads “R K SHARMA”, the two records won’t match, and e-KYC or a PAN–Aadhaar check can fail. The SOP doesn’t create this problem. It removes the operator discretion that used to smooth it over. The practical fix is to pick the fullest correct form of your name and get that onto one accepted document first.
Cost and where to apply
UIDAI’s Aadhaar Seva Kendra page (last updated 1 October 2026) lists a fee of ₹75 for a demographic update such as a name change when done on its own. It is free when combined with a biometric update. If you visit a centre for two family members’ name updates, that is ₹150. The same page says updating documents online through myAadhaar is free until 14 June 2027, which is 251 days from today. That free window is for document updates; a name change itself is a demographic update.
The “two changes in a lifetime” limit on names is often repeated online. We didn’t find it in the 18 September SOP, so we aren’t stating it as a rule here.
From the banker’s desk: most re-KYC rejections we see for name mismatches are about initials and order, for example “Sharma Rajesh K” on PAN and “Rajesh Kumar Sharma” on Aadhaar. Under the new SOP, Aadhaar will copy whichever document you submit. Decide which spelling you want across PAN, bank and passport first, then update Aadhaar from that document.
Steps before you apply
- Choose the one document whose spelling you want Aadhaar to copy.
- Find your case in the table above and prepare the matching Annexure if one is needed. The forms are attached to the SOP.
- For a full change of name, get the Gazette Notification first. Without it, the request is “liable to be rejected”.
- Keep the Update Request Number (URN) and track the request on myAadhaar.
- After the update, align your bank KYC. See why a re-KYC mismatch can freeze an account.
Parents updating a child’s record may also need the biometric step. Our child Aadhaar biometric update guide covers the fees from 1 October. If you are opening a child’s first bank account, see our nominee and legal-heir explainer as well.
What the SOP doesn’t say: how long verification takes; whether requests already pending on 18 September are processed under the old SOP or the new one; and whether a court decree can stand in for a Gazette Notification in a major name change. The document is silent on all three, and we found no UIDAI FAQ on them yet.
In short, before the FAQ: Aadhaar will now copy your submitted document letter for letter, so the work is in choosing and fixing that document first.
FAQ
Can I change my name in Aadhaar without a Gazette Notification?
For corrections such as spelling, a married surname, dropping a prefix or removing an alias, the SOP lists other documents. For a major change of name, the SOP says the request is “liable to be rejected” without one.
Will Aadhaar accept “Dr” or “Col” before my name?
No. The SOP says prefixes and ranks are not entered. Removing one needs only a PoI.
Is a document needed to remove dots from my name?
No. Items (l) and (m) of Annexure A list no document for fixing random capitals or dots.
Are the new Aadhaar name change rules already in force?
Yes. It states it is effective from the date of signature, which is 18 September 2026.
Takeaway: under the new rules, the spelling on the document you submit is the spelling you get. Fix that document first.
