A note on dating: IBJA’s live table does not print a date. Its dated archive ends at 19 October, 20 October was a holiday, and the header per-gram rate (₹14,411 for 999) matches today’s PM fix. So we treat these as the 21 October rates. Rates exclude 3% GST and making charges.
Per gram, that is about ₹14,410 for 24K and ₹13,200 for 22K. Gold barely moved during the day (the PM fix was ₹45 above the morning one), while silver gained ₹933 a kg between the two fixes.
How far gold has fallen this month
| IBJA 999 PM fix | ₹ per 10g |
|---|---|
| 16 Oct | 1,46,426 |
| 19 Oct | 1,45,944 |
| 20 Oct | Holiday, no fix |
| 21 Oct | 1,44,105 |
From 16 October to today, 24K gold has fallen ₹2,321 per 10 grams, or 1.59%. Most of that drop came across the holiday, so the market caught up in one go this morning. Our 16 October gold report has the earlier IBJA levels, and how much gold you can keep at home covers the holding limits.
City retail rates (GoodReturns, 21 October)
GoodReturns’ retail quotes dated 21 October, read at about 8:36 PM IST:
| City | 24K (₹/g) | 22K (₹/g) | 18K (₹/g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad | 14,608 | 13,390 | 10,956 |
| Chennai | 14,608 | 13,390 | 10,970 |
| Delhi | 14,623 | 13,405 | 10,971 |
Silver in Mumbai is quoted at ₹230 a gram (₹2,30,000 a kg), unchanged from 20 October. GoodReturns shows 24K Mumbai unchanged from its 20 October figure of ₹14,608.
A note on retail data: on the afternoon of 20 October, GoodReturns showed Mumbai 24K at ₹14,717. Its history now lists 20 October at ₹14,608 (down ₹196), so the site revised that quote later in the day. Retail sites can update during the day; IBJA’s fixed AM and PM rates do not change once published.
Retail vs IBJA: a wider gap today
- 24K: Mumbai retail ₹1,46,080 per 10g vs IBJA PM ₹1,44,105, a gap of ₹1,975 (1.37%).
- 22K: retail ₹1,33,900 vs IBJA 916 PM ₹1,32,000, a gap of ₹1,900 (1.44%).
- Silver: retail ₹230 a gram vs IBJA about ₹206.78, a gap of about ₹23 a gram.
The gap is wider than usual because retail quotes often lag a sharp move in the benchmark. If gold stays at these levels, retail prices may adjust down in the next day or two. When you buy, ask your jeweller which rate they are using.
What a 22K jewellery bill might look like
| Item (10g, 22K at IBJA 916 PM) | Amount (₹) |
|---|---|
| Gold value | 1,32,000 |
| Making charge at 10% (assumed) | 13,200 |
| GST at 3% on gold plus making | 4,356 |
| Total | 1,49,556 |
This uses the benchmark rate for simplicity; your jeweller’s own rate will usually be a little higher. Making charges vary from a few percent for coins to 20% or more for detailed designs, and some jewellers apply GST differently on making. Check the BIS hallmark and six-digit HUID on each piece.
Gold-silver ratio
On today’s PM fixes, one gram of 24K gold buys about 69.7 grams of silver, a touch lower than 69.9 on 19 October, because gold fell slightly faster than silver over the holiday. The ratio shows relative pricing only; it is not a signal to buy either metal.
Why gold fell, and what to watch
Domestic gold follows international prices and the rupee. Global interest rates have been rising: RBI’s MPC minutes, released today, note that the US Federal Reserve raised rates in September and global bond yields are at record highs. Higher yields make non-interest-bearing gold less attractive to big investors. A firm dollar adds to the pressure. On the other side, crude oil above $100 a barrel and tension in West Asia tend to support gold as a safe asset.
Dhanteras is close, and festive buying usually rises when prices dip. That rarely sets the price, but it can narrow the discount dealers offer. We do not forecast prices.
Practical tips for buyers this week
- Compare against IBJA. Today’s 999 rate works out to about ₹14,410 a gram before GST. A retail quote much above that has a large margin built in.
- Coins and bars carry lower making charges than jewellery if you are buying as an investment. Our Dhanteras 2026 gold guide compares options.
- Keep the bill and pay digitally. You will need the invoice if you sell or pledge the gold later; see our gold loan guide for how lenders value jewellery.
- Silver buyers should check purity marks and buy-back terms; retail silver margins are much higher than gold’s.
We will keep tracking the gold silver price today through the festive week. Each update leads with that day’s IBJA fix when it is published, and uses dated retail quotes only when IBJA is closed. If you are checking the gold silver price today on several sites, note the time each one was updated.
