Tatkal NPS on BHIM App: Open an NPS Account in 3 Steps With ₹250

Picture a 26-year-old delivery partner in Pune who pays for everything by UPI but has never opened a pension account because it sounded like forms, branch visits and an agent. From today, he can open one on his phone in three steps. Tatkal NPS, a quick way to open a National Pension System account, went live on the BHIM Payments app on 14 October 2026, NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL) said. Here is how it works, who can use it, and what to check before you put money in.

What is Tatkal NPS?

Tatkal NPS is an onboarding route introduced by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). It lets you open an NPS account through a UPI app using the KYC your bank has already verified, instead of submitting fresh documents. NBSL, a wholly owned subsidiary of NPCI that runs the BHIM app, announced the launch on Wednesday, as reported by IANS.

The key facts from the announcement:

Point Detail
App BHIM Payments app
Steps Enter date of birth, select eligible bank account, make first contribution via UPI
KYC Uses existing bank-verified KYC; no fresh paperwork
Age Indian citizens aged 18 to 85

How to open Tatkal NPS on BHIM: step by step

  1. Update the BHIM app and make sure your bank account with one of the six listed banks is linked.
  2. Find the Tatkal NPS option in the app.
  3. Enter your date of birth. It should match your bank records, since the bank’s KYC is reused.
  4. Select your bank account. Only eligible accounts will be shown.
  5. Pay the first contribution of at least ₹250 by UPI, using your UPI PIN.
  6. Note your PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) and keep the confirmation.

The exact screen names may differ slightly from these steps. Follow what the app shows, and do not share your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone who calls offering to “help” open the account.

Why it matters

NPS has been open to all citizens for years, but opening an account involved enough steps to put many people off. Tying it to UPI reaches people where they already transact. “Tatkal NPS on BHIM addresses the first barrier, getting started,” said Lalitha Nataraj, MD and CEO of NBSL. PFRDA Chairperson S. Ramann said UPI transformed the way India pays and Tatkal NPS “can transform the way India prepares for retirement”.

The low starting amounts matter too. A ₹250 opening and ₹10 top-ups mean gig workers, small traders and first-time earners can start small and add money whenever they have some to spare.

What small amounts can grow into

NPS money is invested in market-linked funds managed by PFRDA-regulated pension fund managers, so returns are not fixed. The table below is only an illustration of compounding, not a forecast of NPS returns.

Monthly contribution Period Total put in Value at 8% a year (illustrative) Value at 10% a year (illustrative)
₹1,000 25 years ₹3,00,000 about ₹9.57 lakh about ₹13.38 lakh

Our calculation, assuming monthly contributions at the start of each month and monthly compounding, before charges and tax. Actual returns can be lower or higher, and can be negative in some years.

Things to check before you start

  • NPS is a long-term product. Money is meant for retirement, and withdrawals before that are limited by PFRDA’s rules. Read the current exit and withdrawal rules on PFRDA’s site before investing.
  • Fund choice. You may be able to choose your pension fund manager and how much goes into equity, corporate bonds and government securities, or use an auto option. Check what the app sets by default.
  • Charges. NPS has account, transaction and fund management charges. They are low, but they apply even to small contributions.
  • Tax. NPS contributions can bring tax benefits under specific sections, depending on your tax regime. Whether you gain depends on your situation; check with a tax adviser.
  • Nominee. Add a nominee after opening the account.
  • One account per person. If you already have a PRAN, for example through an employer, do not open another; add money to the existing one.

Is the bank KYC route safe?

Using bank-verified KYC means your identity has already been checked under RBI rules when you opened your bank account. If your bank KYC is out of date, the onboarding may fail; our post on re-KYC and account freezes explains how to update it. As with any UPI payment, check the payee name before you enter your PIN, and if a contribution fails but money is debited, follow the steps in our failed UPI refund guide.

Tatkal NPS vs a SIP in mutual funds

Point NPS Mutual fund SIP
Purpose Retirement Any goal
Regulator PFRDA SEBI
Withdrawal Restricted until retirement, with limited exceptions Usually any time (except ELSS lock-in)
Minimum on BHIM Tatkal route ₹250 to open, ₹10 later Varies by fund

Many savers use both. SIP flows hit a record in September, as we reported in our SIP inflows post. If you want money you can reach before retirement, NPS alone is not the right fit.

What the announcement does not say

The launch note does not spell out which NPS tier the account opens under, which pension fund or investment choice is applied by default, or whether you can add a nominee inside BHIM. These details matter. After opening, log in to your NPS account through the official CRA portal linked from PFRDA’s site and review your fund, scheme choice and nominee.

A few common doubts, answered.
