Inside the day, gold slipped slightly from the morning session: 24K was ₹88 lower in the PM fix than in the AM fix. Silver moved the other way and gained ₹606 between sessions.

A mismatch to note: GoodReturns shows Friday’s city rates unchanged from Thursday, even though IBJA’s benchmark rose ₹484. Retail quotes may catch up on Saturday, so ask your jeweller for the day’s board rate before you pay. Silver in Mumbai is listed at ₹2,30,000 a kg (₹230 a gram), also unchanged.

Retail vs IBJA: the gap narrowed

Item IBJA PM Mumbai retail Gap
24K, per 10g ₹1,46,426 ₹1,47,440 ₹1,014 (0.69%)
22K, per 10g ₹1,34,126 ₹1,35,150 ₹1,024 (0.76%)
Silver, per kg ₹2,10,918 ₹2,30,000 ₹19,082 (9.05%)

Our calculations. Any gold silver price today comparison should use the same purity on both sides. On Thursday the 24K gap was about 1.03%; it shrank today only because IBJA rose while the retail listing stayed put. IBJA’s fix is a trade benchmark. Shops add their own costs, which is why retail sits above it.

Every IBJA purity, PM session

Purity Usual name PM fix (₹/10g) Per gram (₹)
999 24K 1,46,426 14,642.60
995 24K (bars) 1,45,840 14,584.00
916 22K 1,34,126 13,412.60
750 18K 1,09,820 10,982.00
585 14K 85,659 8,565.90

Platinum 999 closed at ₹58,484 per 10 grams, up ₹835. Match the row to the purity stamped on your piece when you sell or exchange it.

A sample jewellery bill

Retail rates did not move today, so the bill for a 10-gram 22K chain in Mumbai works out the same as Thursday:

  1. Gold value at ₹13,515 a gram: ₹1,35,150.
  2. Add 10% making charges: ₹1,48,665.
  3. Add 3% GST on the total: about ₹1,53,125.

Making charges differ from shop to shop, and some jewellers charge per gram instead of a percentage. Ask for an itemised estimate showing gold weight, rate, making charges, stone weight if any, and GST. Check the six-character HUID on the hallmark; 22K is marked 916.

Silver bounced harder, and the ratio eased

The gold-silver ratio tells you how many grams of silver one gram of gold buys. On IBJA’s PM rates it was about 70.1 on Thursday. Today it is about 69.4 (₹14,642.60 a gram of 24K against ₹210.92 a gram of silver). It was 67.6 last Friday. A falling ratio means silver gained more than gold. Silver tends to move further than gold in both directions, so treat one day’s rise with caution.

Also today: gold fund-of-fund curbs

Several fund houses, including ICICI Prudential, Tata and Mirae Asset, stopped fresh lump-sum investments and new SIPs in their gold ETF fund-of-funds from 16 October, according to notices on their websites. Existing SIP instalments continue, and redemptions are allowed. Gold ETFs bought through a demat account are not covered by these notices. Buying before Dhanteras?

  • Spread large purchases. Gold fell more than ₹3,000 per 10 grams this week and rose ₹484 today. Nobody can time the low point; buying in parts reduces the risk of one bad day.
  • Compare quotes. With retail silver about 9% above IBJA, checking two or three shops can help on bigger buys.
  • Need cash, not a sale? A loan against jewellery keeps the gold in the family. See our gold loan guide before you sell.

Planning a festival purchase? Read our Dhanteras 2026 gold guide first, and keep the bill: it records the purity, weight and price you paid, which you will need if you sell later.

What we left out

We have not quoted MCX futures or international prices, because we did not find a dated, timed figure we could check for today. Rates in your city can also differ from these lists because of local taxes and transport costs.
