The site shows today’s AM and PM figures in its undated “today” table; its dated archive lists rows up to 13 October. We treat the undated table as 14 October because the latest dated row is 13 October and the figures differ from it. RBI’s SGB redemption price, announced today and based on IBJA closing prices for 12, 13 and 14 October, matches these figures (see below).

Gold slipped ₹281 between the morning and evening fix. Silver fell more sharply, losing ₹570 within the day and ₹5,216 since Tuesday’s close.

On GoodReturns, Mumbai 24K is ₹14,826 a gram today against ₹14,929 for 13 October, a fall of ₹1,030 per 10 grams. 22K is down ₹950 per 10 grams. Note that the site’s 13 October row (₹14,929) is lower than the ₹14,967 it showed on Tuesday morning; it appears to revise rows during the day.

Retail vs IBJA: the gap you pay

Metal Mumbai retail (GoodReturns) IBJA 14 Oct PM Gap
24K, 10g ₹1,48,260 ₹1,46,064 ₹2,196 (1.50%)
22K, 10g ₹1,35,900 ₹1,33,795 ₹2,105 (1.57%)
Silver, 1 kg ₹2,35,000 ₹2,13,822 ₹21,178 (9.90%)

Our arithmetic. Silver’s retail premium is much wider than gold’s. Part of this is timing: GoodReturns’ silver figure is unchanged from its earlier listing while IBJA fell sharply today. Before buying silver, ask the jeweller which day’s rate their bill uses.

All IBJA purities today, per 10 grams

Most jewellery in India is 22K (916), but lighter and studded pieces are often 18K (750) or 14K (585). IBJA publishes a rate for each. The table below shows Wednesday’s AM and PM fixes, so you can match the rate to the purity stamped on your piece.

Purity Common name AM fix (₹/10g) PM fix (₹/10g)
999 24K 1,46,345 1,46,064
995 24K (bars) 1,45,759 1,45,479
916 22K 1,34,052 1,33,795
750 18K 1,09,759 1,09,548
585 14K 85,612 85,447

Two practical uses. First, if you are selling or exchanging old jewellery, ask the jeweller which purity they are valuing it at and compare against the matching row, not the 24K rate. Second, for 18K diamond jewellery, the gold value is only part of the price; stones and labour usually make up a large share, so the gold rate tells you less about the final bill. For a look at how rates moved earlier in the week, see Monday’s rates.

SGB investors: today’s prices set a redemption value

The RBI said today that the premature redemption price for SGB 2019-20 Series V, due on 15 October, is ₹14,725 per gram. It is the simple average of IBJA’s 999 closing prices for 12, 13 and 14 October. Our check: (₹14,806.1 + ₹14,761.7 + ₹14,606.4) ÷ 3 = ₹14,724.73, which rounds to ₹14,725. Holders of that tranche who bought at the 2019 issue price of ₹3,788 a gram would get nearly four times their money. For how prices have moved this week, compare with Tuesday’s gold rates.

What the numbers mean if you are buying

  • Your bill will be higher than any table here. Add 3% GST on gold value and making charges, which jewellers set. On a 10-gram 22K chain at ₹1,35,900 with 10% making, the gold-plus-making value is ₹1,49,490 before GST.
  • Check purity. Hallmarked jewellery carries a HUID. 22K is 916 purity.
  • Compare two or three shops. Making charges vary far more than the gold rate.
  • Do not chase a single day’s fall. Prices moved over ₹3,000 in three sessions; they can move either way. If you are buying for a festival, splitting purchases may suit some families.
