Silver is at ₹2,39,900 a kg in Mumbai, Delhi and most metros, and ₹2,44,900 in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala. IBJA has not yet published either its 13 October AM or PM fix. How today compares with Monday

GoodReturns lists Mumbai 24K at ₹14,967 a gram today against ₹14,968 for 12 October: down ₹1 a gram, or ₹10 per 10 grams. 22K is also down ₹10 per 10 grams. Silver is down ₹100 a kg, from ₹2,40,000 to ₹2,39,900.

A note for readers who saw our Monday evening update: at about 6:45 PM IST on Monday, GoodReturns showed Mumbai 24K at ₹1,50,980. Its 12 October row now reads ₹1,49,680, so the site appears to have revised Monday’s retail figure later that night. We compare today with the row as the site shows it now, and flag the change rather than mixing the two.

IBJA rates: 13 October fix pending

The India Bullion and Jewellers Association publishes two benchmark rates a day, an opening (AM) and a closing (PM) fix. At 6:18 AM IST, ibjarates.com showed “Rates will be uploaded soon” for today. Both the 13 October AM and PM fixes are pending. The latest published fixes, for context only, are Monday’s:

Retail vs IBJA: why the gap

Comparing today’s Mumbai retail quote with Monday’s IBJA PM fix:

The dates differ, so read the gap as rough. IBJA is a wholesale benchmark used by banks and in many gold-loan and bond valuations. Retail sites quote what jewellers in a city charge before making charges and GST, which carries a dealer margin. The silver gap is much wider. Retail silver prices on GoodReturns tend to move in ₹5,000 steps and change less often than IBJA’s fix.

What you will actually pay

The gold silver price today on rate sites is only the starting point. For 10 grams of 22K jewellery in Mumbai at ₹1,37,190, 3% GST alone takes the cost to about ₹1,41,306, before making charges. Making charges vary widely by design and shop, from a few per cent to well over 10%. GoodReturns’ own calculator on the Mumbai page shows a total of ₹1,58,262 for 10 grams of 22K, assuming 12% making plus 3% GST; your jeweller’s figure will differ.

• Ask for the gram rate and the making charge separately on the bill.
• Check the HUID hallmark on every piece.
• For investment rather than jewellery, coins and bars carry lower making charges, and gold ETFs have no making charge at all.

Silver: little change this month

Retail silver started October at ₹2,35,000 a kg and is at ₹2,39,900 today, up ₹4,900 or about 2.09%, as per GoodReturns’ monthly table. The October high so far is ₹2,40,000 (10 October).

• IBJA AM fix: usually published around midday; we will refresh this post with it.
• Rupee: the rupee closed at 95.75 on Monday after RBI measures (see our rupee report). A firmer rupee lowers the rupee cost of imported gold, all else equal.
• Inflation: September CPI came in at 5.54%, with silver jewellery inflation at 87.80% (see our CPI report).
