Sector moves and the broader market
Healthcare was the weakest pocket. On the BSE, the Hospitals index dropped 4.97% and Healthcare 2.35%, followed by Consumer Durables (−1.43%), Metal (−1.24%), Commodities (−0.54%) and FMCG (−0.35%), PTI reported. NSE’s sector indices told a similar story. Nifty Media was the top gainer at 2.74% and Nifty Realty rose 1.62%, while Nifty Healthcare fell 2.57%, Pharma 1.84% and Metal 1.50%, according to India Today.
The broader market was steadier than the benchmarks. The Nifty Midcap 100 ended almost flat and the Smallcap 100 gained 0.27%. On the BSE, the MidCap Select index fell 0.44% and the SmallCap Select index rose 0.34%. India VIX, the volatility gauge, rose 0.61%.
Why did the market fall for a third day?
Oil and bond yields again set the tone. Brent crude was around $103 a barrel, up about 0.5–0.8% depending on the time quoted (PTI put it at $103.1; India Today at $103.43). Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking noted that the US 10-year Treasury yield had touched 5.293% in the previous session.
“The relief rally loses its steam with profit booking at the higher levels, followed by a rebound in oil prices. The elevated global bond yields continue to remain a key overhang, limiting the scope for sustained risk-taking,” Nair said, according to PTI.
FII selling behind the September fall
Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹9,980.22 crore on Tuesday, 29 September, according to exchange data cited by PTI. India Today described it as their biggest single-day outflow in around four months and said FIIs had sold about $2.7 billion of Indian shares in September. Daily provisional figures are on NSE’s FII/DII activity page. The rupee gained 0.17% to 95.82 against the dollar on Wednesday.
The previous session’s numbers are in our Sensex report for 29 September, when the index lost 242.65 points.
