Friday, 23 October: a late recovery
On Friday the Sensex fell more than 1% during the day before settling at 73,123.83, down 125.56 points (0.17%). The Nifty slipped toward 22,400 intraday and closed at 22,600, down 87.65 points (0.39%), according to The Hindu and BusinessLine. Swiggy shares fell nearly 17% after its September-quarter results, Fortune India reported.
Our daily reports for 21 October and 22 October cover the middle of the week.
Three reasons the week went wrong
1. Crude oil
Brent crude futures rose to about $114 a barrel on energy supply fears after attacks on Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Houthis, BusinessLine reported. India imports most of its oil, so higher crude hurts the rupee and many companies’ costs. Fifteen of 16 major sectors lost ground in the week.
2. Foreign selling
Foreign investors were net sellers in the cash market on the days data were available, while domestic institutions bought, according to MarketCue’s compilation of exchange data. The rupee closed at 94.93 to the dollar on Friday, down 12 paise on the day, BusinessLine reported.
3. The Jio IPO drew money away
Bids for the record ₹30,213 crore Jio Platforms IPO, which closed on Friday, tied up a large amount of money during the week. News reports said this drained liquidity from the secondary market, especially from smaller stocks. Money blocked for applicants who do not get shares should be released around 27 October.
Why small caps fell three times as hard
Smaller companies usually fall harder when money leaves the market, because fewer shares trade and selling moves prices more. If you hold small-cap mutual funds through a SIP, one bad week is normal for the category; our piece on whether to stop a SIP covers how to think about falls.
Bank stocks and results
The Nifty Bank lost 2.79%, more than the Nifty. Several lenders reported September-quarter numbers this week and on Saturday, including Bank of India on Thursday and Kotak Mahindra Bank, IDFC First Bank and AU Small Finance Bank on Saturday. Markets react on Monday.
What to watch in the week of 26 October
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Mon 26 Oct | Jio Platforms basis of allotment (on or about); RBI’s 4-day VRR auction; market reaction to Saturday’s bank results |
| Tue 27 Oct | Nifty weekly expiry; Jio refunds and demat credit (on or about) |
| Wed 28 Oct | Jio Platforms listing on NSE and BSE (on or about) |
| Through the week | Crude prices, US Federal Reserve decision, more Q2 results |
Dates for Jio are indicative “on or about” dates from the offer timetable and can move. The VRR auction is from RBI’s 23 October notice.
What this means for ordinary investors
- A 2% weekly fall in the Sensex is within normal range. The broader slide is the bigger story.
- If you need money within a year or two, it should not be in small-cap funds in the first place.
- Do not sell just because a week was bad, and do not buy just because prices are lower. Decide based on your plan.

FAQs
How much did the Sensex fall this week?
1,605.44 points, or 2.15%, to 73,123.83 between the 16 and 23 October closes.
Was the market open on Saturday, 24 October?
No. NSE and BSE do not trade on Saturdays. It was also shut on 20 October for Dussehra.
Why did small caps fall so much?
News reports cited high crude prices, foreign selling and money moving into the Jio IPO. Smaller stocks fall harder when liquidity dries up.
