Within refunds, domestic refunds fell 13.5% to ₹13,504 crore, while export refunds processed through ICEGATE rose 10.2% to ₹13,497 crore.
Why is import GST rising faster?
The September increase in gross collections was ₹26,156 crore. Imports contributed ₹13,494 crore of it and domestic revenue ₹12,662 crore, so imports accounted for slightly more than half, as Mint pointed out in its report on the September data. The same report cited a Crisil Ratings analysis of 22 September showing IGST from imports up nearly 30% in the five months to August, helped by imports of electronics, machinery, gold and fertilisers, higher commodity prices and a weaker rupee.
“This suggests a meaningful part of the headline buoyancy is coming from imports,” Pratik Jain, partner at Price Waterhouse & Co LLP, told Mint, adding that sustained domestic growth will be the thing to watch.
Where September ranks this year
The GST collection September 2026 total was the third month this fiscal year above ₹2 lakh crore, Mint reported, but it trailed July’s ₹2.11 lakh crore and the record ₹2.43 lakh crore collected in April 2026.

Over the first half of 2026-27, domestic revenue grew far more slowly than import GST, and refunds rose faster than collections. Net GST revenue for the six months still grew in double digits.
