The Nifty opened at 23,065.10, dipped to a low of 22,913.80 and climbed to a high of 23,149.85, closing near the top of its range. Among Nifty 50 stocks, 26 rose and 24 fell, so the gain was narrow and driven by a few heavyweights.
Why IT stocks led
Tech Mahindra was the top Sensex gainer, up 8.45%, after it reported a 32.74% rise in consolidated net profit to ₹1,585.6 crore for July–September and approved a 1:1 bonus issue, subject to approvals, according to BusinessLine. TCS, Infosys and HCLTech were also among the major gainers. Wipro rose in early trade after its revenue beat estimates, while Persistent Systems fell about 3% after a 25% drop in quarterly profit.
The Nifty IT index is up 11.72% for the week, from 28,574.90 last Friday, on our calculation from NSE data. BusinessLine linked the rally to strong results and a rotation from global AI stocks into software companies. A weaker rupee, near 95 to the dollar, also helps IT exporters, whose revenue is largely in dollars.
| Company | Quarterly result (as reported) | Share move (as reported) |
|---|---|---|
| Tech Mahindra | Net profit +32.74% to ₹1,585.6 crore; 1:1 bonus proposed | +8.45% at close |

Money flows, rupee and oil
- Foreign investors sold a net ₹5,285 crore in the cash market on Thursday, while domestic institutions bought ₹3,319 crore, per provisional data cited by BusinessLine. Our report on FPI selling in September explains how these numbers are counted.
- Rupee: It ended at 94.96 per dollar, up from 95.05, BusinessLine reported. See our dollar to rupee guide for what moves it.
- Brent crude slipped 0.3% to about $105.6 a barrel. High oil prices remain a worry for India’s import bill and inflation.
What to watch next week
- A short week. Markets are closed on Tuesday, 20 October, for Dussehra, so there are four trading sessions.
- The Jio Platforms IPO. Anchor bidding is on Monday, and the issue opens on Wednesday, 21 October. Details are in our Jio Platforms IPO guide.
- More results. Federal Bank reported a record quarterly profit of ₹1,386 crore on Friday, and PNB, DLF and others were due to report after market hours, per BusinessLine.
- Market rules. SEBI’s new closing auction and expiry-day rules, issued on Thursday, take effect only from 7 December, so trading next week runs on current timings.
What this means for your portfolio
Nifty today is up, but a one-day or one-week rally does not change long-term plans. The Nifty is still below where it was a year ago. If you invest through SIPs, the instalments continue regardless of daily moves. If an IT rally has made one sector a much bigger part of your portfolio than you intended, that may be a reason to review your allocation with your adviser, not to chase further gains. For an earlier example of how a single session can swing, see our 5 October Sensex report.
