The intraday pattern mirrored Tuesday’s. On 29 September, IBJA’s morning 999 rate was ₹1,47,400 and it firmed up by the evening; on Wednesday, gold started stronger and gave back ₹491 between the two fixes. The morning silver rate of ₹2,22,273 was also higher than the evening figure by ₹1,838.
22 carat gold rate and city-wise retail prices
IBJA’s 916 purity rate, the benchmark for 22 carat gold jewellery, was ₹1,35,465 per 10 grams on Wednesday evening. The gold price today at a jewellery counter is higher than IBJA’s because jewellers add GST, making charges and their own margins, and they vary by city.
What a 10-gram 22 carat chain could cost
As a rough illustration, take IBJA’s 916 rate of ₹1,35,465 for 10 grams and assume a making charge of 10%, or ₹13,547. GST of 3% on the combined ₹1,49,012 adds ₹4,470, taking the bill to about ₹1,53,482. Making charges vary widely by design and jeweller, so the final figure can be several thousand rupees higher or lower.
The city rates below were compiled by GoodReturns and reported by Upstox around midday on 30 September. They come from a single source and are indicative.
| City | 24K per 10 g | 22K per 10 g | 18K per 10 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi | ₹1,48,940 | ₹1,37,250 | ₹1,12,330 |
| Mumbai | ₹1,49,570 | ₹1,37,100 | ₹1,12,180 |
| Kolkata | ₹1,49,570 | ₹1,37,100 | ₹1,12,180 |
| Chennai | ₹1,49,570 | ₹1,37,100 | ₹1,14,700 |
| Ahmedabad | ₹1,49,620 | ₹1,37,150 | ₹1,12,230 |
Oddly, Delhi’s 22 carat figure in this list is higher than Mumbai’s even though its 24 carat figure is lower, and Chennai’s 18 carat rate stands apart from the other cities. Both look like quirks of the source data rather than market signals, so the numbers are best treated as a rough guide. Hallmarked jewellery carries a six-digit HUID code that can be checked through the BIS hallmarking system.
Why does the silver rate today differ by source?
The silver rate today depends heavily on which source is quoted. IBJA’s evening 999 silver rate was ₹2,20,435 per kg, excluding GST. GoodReturns listed retail silver at ₹2,40,000 per kg in all the major cities it covers, Upstox reported. The gap of nearly ₹20,000 reflects GST, dealer premiums and the fact that retail boards are updated at different times of day. Silver on MCX was trading about 0.43% higher at ₹2,26,270 per kg around 9:13 AM, before IBJA’s evening fix showed a decline.
MCX and the global backdrop
On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold was trading 0.64% higher at ₹1,49,810 per 10 grams around 9:13 AM, Upstox reported. A closing MCX figure was not available when this report was written.
Globally, bullion has been under pressure since the US Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points, its first increase in three years, as Business Today noted in a report on 30 September. Higher interest rates make non-yielding gold less attractive to hold. In India, the World Gold Council’s September update described the mood as “cautious festive optimism”, with buyers in a wait-and-watch mode for discretionary purchases and a shift towards lighter jewellery, according to Upstox.
Equity markets were weak on the same day; the Sensex fell for a third session, as covered in our Sensex report for 30 September. Titan was among the losers.
