Stock Market Holidays 2026: NSE Shut on 20 October for Dussehra; Muhurat Trading on Sunday, 8 November
The rule is simple: on a date in NSE’s trading holiday list, there is no trading in equities, equity derivatives or currency derivatives for the whole day. The next such date is Tuesday, 20 October 2026, for Dussehra. After that come Diwali Laxmi Pujan on Sunday, 8 November (a muhurat trading day), Diwali-Balipratipada on Tuesday, 10 November, Guru Nanak Jayanti on 24 November and Christmas on 25 December. Here are the remaining stock market holidays for 2026 and what each one means for your trades, SIPs and IPO bids.

Dussehra, 20 October: what to expect
Markets trade normally on Monday, 19 October, shut on Tuesday, and reopen on Wednesday, 21 October. A few practical effects:
- Settlement shifts by a day. India’s cash market settles on T+1, counting only settlement working days. Shares bought on Monday would normally reach your demat account on Wednesday rather than Tuesday, and sale proceeds would arrive a day later too. Your broker’s contract note shows the exact settlement date.
- Weekly expiries can move. When an expiry day falls on a holiday, exchanges shift it to the previous trading day. Check your broker app for the revised expiry date of any contract you hold.
- Mutual fund orders: NSE’s mutual fund segment is also closed. Purchase or redemption requests placed on Tuesday are processed on the next business day, at that day’s NAV, as per the scheme’s cut-off rules.
- Commodity traders: NSE’s commodity segment stays shut in the morning and reopens for the evening session.
The Jio Platforms IPO and the holiday
The holiday falls between two key dates of the year’s biggest IPO. Anchor bidding for the Jio Platforms issue is on Monday, 19 October, and the public issue opens on Wednesday, 21 October and closes on Friday, 23 October, as reported in our Jio Platforms IPO post. Applications cannot be made on Tuesday because the exchange bidding platform is closed. If you plan to apply through UPI, make sure your UPI app and bank are ready before Wednesday. For other issues this month, see our upcoming IPO list.
Diwali week: muhurat trading on Sunday, 8 November
NSE lists Diwali Laxmi Pujan on Sunday, 8 November, with an asterisk, which marks the special muhurat trading session held on Diwali evening. NSE has not yet announced the session timings; it usually does so closer to the date by circular. Two days later, on Tuesday, 10 November, markets are closed for Diwali-Balipratipada.
From 7 December, SEBI’s new closing auction rules will also apply to special trading sessions, but this year’s muhurat session comes before that date, so the current rules apply. Our closing auction explainer covers how the auction works today.
| Week | Trading days | Holiday |
|---|---|---|
| 19–23 Oct | 4 (Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri) | Tue 20 Oct, Dussehra |
| 9–13 Nov | 4 (Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri) | Tue 10 Nov, Balipratipada |
| 23–27 Nov | 4 (Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri) | Tue 24 Nov, Guru Nanak Jayanti |
| 21–25 Dec | 4 (Mon–Thu) | Fri 25 Dec, Christmas |
Our count from NSE’s list. Three of the five remaining holidays fall on a Tuesday, so none of them creates a long weekend for traders.
The full-year picture
NSE’s 2026 list has 20 entries. Sixteen fall on weekdays and cost a trading day, including 15 January for the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections. Four fall on a Saturday or Sunday: Mahashivratri, Id-ul-Fitr, Independence Day and the Diwali muhurat day. With 2 October gone, the weekday holidays still ahead are 20 October, 10 November, 24 November and 25 December.
BSE publishes its own list. Its page loads the dates by script, and we could not read them from it for this report, so we have relied on NSE’s list. In most years the two exchanges close on the same dates; check BSE’s page if you trade only there.
Stock market holidays vs bank holidays
They are not the same list. NSE follows its own calendar for the whole country. Bank holidays are set state by state under RBI’s list, and a bank may be open in your city on a market holiday, or closed when the market is open. If you need to move money for a trade or an IPO, check your bank branch’s holiday list too. UPI, net banking and ATMs normally work on holidays.
Plan around stock market holidays
- Before a holiday, make sure any margin top-up or fund transfer reaches your broker on the previous trading day.
- SIP dates: If your SIP date falls on 20 October, the instalment is usually processed on the next business day. You don’t need to change anything.
- F&O positions: Holding options over a holiday means one fewer trading day for the position, but time decay continues on the calendar.
- Pending orders: Day orders lapse at the end of each session. Re-enter them after the holiday if you still want them.
For how a typical closed day plays out, see our post on the 2 October market holiday.
