Stock Market Holiday Today

Stock Market Holiday Today: NSE, BSE Closed on 2 October 2026 for Gandhi Jayanti; MCX Shut, Trading Resumes Monday

The NSE and BSE are closed on Friday, 2 October 2026, for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, so the stock market holiday today means no trading in equities or equity derivatives. NSE’s trading holiday circular for 2026 (Circular 172/2025, dated 12 December 2025) lists 2 October as holiday number 11 of 15 for the year. The commodity exchange MCX is also shut for both its sessions. Regular trading resumes on Monday, 5 October.

The last session before the break was Thursday, 1 October, when the Sensex fell 570.59 points to 71,909.70 and the Nifty 50 lost 198.50 points to 22,421.95, according to BusinessLine. That close stays the latest reference for the market until Monday morning; the session is covered in our Sensex report for 1 October.

Is the stock market holiday today for NSE and BSE both?

Yes. Gandhi Jayanti is a full trading holiday on both exchanges. BusinessLine’s market report on Thursday also noted that markets would remain closed on Friday, 2 October. With Saturday and Sunday following, the market is shut for three days in a row.

No orders can be placed in the cash market or in futures and options today, and exchange-linked processes such as settlement pause until the next working day.

What about MCX and commodity trading?

MCX’s holiday table for 2026 marks Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, 2 October, as closed for the morning session (9 am to 5 pm) as well as the evening session (5 pm to 11:30/11:55 pm). So the stock market holiday today covers commodities as well. That is different from many other festival holidays, when MCX shuts only in the morning and opens for the evening session. Commodity trading restarts with the morning session on Monday, 5 October. The full list is on MCX’s trading holidays page.

NSE holiday list 2026: dates left this year

After today, four weekday trading holidays remain on the NSE holiday list 2026. They are taken from the exchange’s official circular, available as the NSE trading holidays circular for 2026 (PDF).

Date Day Occasion MCX evening session
2 October 2026 Friday Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti Closed
20 October 2026 Tuesday Dussehra Open
10 November 2026 Tuesday Diwali Balipratipada Open
24 November 2026 Tuesday Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev Open
25 December 2026 Friday Christmas Closed

Sources: NSE Circular 172/2025 for the equity holidays; MCX holiday table for the evening-session column. MCX keeps its morning session shut on all five dates.

The circular also lists four holidays that fall on weekends this year and need no closure: Mahashivratri (15 February), Id-ul-Fitr (21 March), Independence Day (15 August) and Diwali Laxmi Pujan (Sunday, 8 November).

When is Muhurat trading 2026?

Muhurat trading 2026 will be held on Sunday, 8 November, the day of Diwali Laxmi Pujan. NSE’s circular says the session “will be conducted” that day and that its timings “shall be notified subsequently”. MCX’s holiday page carries the same note for commodities. As of 2 October, neither exchange had published the timing.

Muhurat trading is a short session held on Diwali in most years. Because the timing is still pending, any specific hour quoted online for this year is a guess until the exchanges issue a separate circular.

Are banks closed today too?

The stock market holiday today coincides with a bank holiday, and branches are shut in most of the country. The Reserve Bank of India’s holiday matrix for October 2026 lists Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October as a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act. RBI’s list also says all banks observe a holiday on the second and fourth Saturdays, which fall on 10 and 24 October this month.

Digital payments continue through the holiday. UPI, NEFT and RTGS are available round the clock, as explained in our NEFT vs IMPS vs RTGS guide. Cheques deposited today will be processed only on the next working day.

What happens on Monday, 5 October

Monday is a busy day. Equity and commodity trading resume, the Nityas Gems and Vishal Nirmiti IPOs close for bidding (details in our IPO subscription report), and the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee starts its three-day meeting. The rate decision is due on Wednesday, 7 October; our RBI policy preview has the poll numbers.

Any news from global markets over the three-day break, such as moves in crude oil or US bond yields, will show up in Indian prices only when trading resumes on Monday.
