Aadhaar OTP e-KYC Account Limits and Small Account Rules: ₹1 Lakh Balance, 1-Year Deadline
The rule is simple: a bank account opened with just an Aadhaar OTP, with no branch visit or video call, is a limited account. It can hold no more than ₹1 lakh, take no more than ₹2 lakh of credits in a year, and must be upgraded to full KYC within 12 months or the bank will close it. Many people open such accounts through apps without realising the limits until a salary credit or a transfer bounces. The same goes for “Small Accounts” opened without any identity document. Here are the Aadhaar OTP e-KYC account limits and Small Account limits, straight from the RBI’s KYC Directions, and how to move to a full account.
Aadhaar OTP e-KYC account limits
When you open an account by entering your Aadhaar number and an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, without meeting a bank official or doing video KYC, the bank is opening it in “non-face-to-face mode”. The RBI’s (Commercial Banks – Know Your Customer) Directions, 2025, updated as on 1 October 2026, put these conditions on such accounts:
| Condition | Limit or rule |
|---|---|
| Consent | Specific consent for OTP authentication |
| Alerts and OTPs | Sent only to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar |
| Balance | Aggregate of all deposit accounts with the bank not above ₹1 lakh; if exceeded, operations stop until full KYC is done |
| Credits | Aggregate credits in a financial year not above ₹2 lakh |
| Loans | Term loans only, aggregate not above ₹60,000 in a year |
| Validity | Not more than one year without full KYC |
| If not upgraded in a year | Deposit accounts closed immediately; no further debits on loan accounts |
| Declaration | No other OTP-based e-KYC account opened, or to be opened, with any other regulated entity |

What this means in practice
- Salary accounts: a monthly salary of ₹20,000 would use up the entire ₹2 lakh annual credit limit by the tenth month (₹20,000 × 10 = ₹2,00,000), leaving no room for the eleventh salary. A ₹35,000 salary hits the ₹1 lakh balance cap in about three months if you do not spend it.
- One such account only: you have to declare that you have no other OTP-based account with any bank or regulated entity. Other banks also cannot open accounts relying on the KYC of an OTP-based account.
- Changing your mobile number: because alerts go only to the Aadhaar-registered mobile, banks follow a stricter process for number changes on these accounts.
How to upgrade to full KYC
The bank must complete full customer due diligence within a year, in one of two ways:
- In person: visit the branch (or have a bank official or business correspondent do biometric e-KYC) with your documents.
- Video KYC (V-CIP): a live video call with a bank official, which includes fresh Aadhaar OTP authentication if Aadhaar data is used. Our guide to re-KYC and frozen accounts covers related steps.
Do it early. Once the account is closed for missing the deadline, you will need to withdraw or transfer the money through the bank’s process and may have to open a fresh account.
Small Account limits
A Small Account is meant for people who do not have an officially valid document (OVD) like a passport, driving licence, voter ID or Aadhaar. It can be opened with a photograph and a signature or thumb impression, under paragraph 28 of the Directions.
| Condition | Limit or rule |
|---|---|
| Credits | Aggregate in a financial year not above ₹1 lakh |
| Withdrawals and transfers | Aggregate in a month not above ₹10,000 |
| Balance | Not above ₹50,000 at any time (government grants, welfare benefits and procurement payments not counted for this limit) |
| Documents | Self-attested photograph; signature or thumb impression made in front of a designated bank officer, who certifies it |
| Where | CBS-linked branches, or where the branch can make sure no foreign remittance is credited |
| Validity | 12 months; extendable by 12 months if the holder shows they applied for an OVD in the first year |

The bank must check the limits before allowing each transaction. So a withdrawal that would take the month’s total past ₹10,000 can be refused.
OTP e-KYC account vs Small Account vs full KYC
| Point | Aadhaar OTP e-KYC | Small Account | Full KYC |
|---|---|---|---|
| How opened | Aadhaar OTP, no meeting | Photo and signature/thumbprint at branch | OVD at branch, biometric e-KYC or V-CIP |
| Balance cap | ₹1 lakh | ₹50,000 | None under KYC rules |
| Annual credit cap | ₹2 lakh | ₹1 lakh | None under KYC rules |
| Monthly withdrawal cap | Not specified | ₹10,000 | None under KYC rules |
| Time limit | 1 year | 12 + 12 months | Periodic KYC updation |

Who should use which
- OTP e-KYC: fine for a quick start, for example to receive a refund or start saving small amounts, as long as you plan to complete video KYC soon.
- Small Account: useful for people who genuinely lack identity documents, such as some migrant workers, and want to receive welfare benefits or small wages. Apply for an OVD in the first year.
- Full KYC: the practical choice for regular salary credits, larger savings and most borrowing, since the limits above do not apply.

Red flags
- Someone offering to open an account “in your name” using your Aadhaar OTP. Never share an Aadhaar OTP with anyone; it may be used to open a mule account.
- Receiving alerts for an account you did not open. Contact the bank immediately.
- Agents charging a fee to “raise limits”. Only full KYC with the bank lifts these limits.
