Sensex Today, 5 October 2026: Closes 472 Points Higher at 72,382; Nifty at 22,555 After Soft US Jobs Data
Sensex today rose 472.77 points, or 0.66%, to close at 72,382.47 on Monday, 5 October 2026, and the NSE Nifty 50 gained 133.80 points, or 0.60%, to 22,555.75, according to BusinessLine’s market wrap, consistent with levels on the NSE site. The session snapped an eight-week losing streak for the benchmarks, helped by softer US jobs data that cut bets on an aggressive Federal Reserve hike.
Intraday, the Sensex had climbed as much as 722 points to 72,631.93 before giving some ground into the close. Brent crude was quoted around $102.4 a barrel in the same report.
Sensex today: who led and who lagged?
BusinessLine listed ITC, Eternal, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries and Larsen & Toubro among the Sensex winners. HCL Tech, HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma, Infosys and Asian Paints were among the laggards. On the Nifty, top gainers included ITC (+4.81%) and Bajaj Finance (+2.38%); HCL Tech (−3.52%) and HDFC Bank (−2.20%) were among the top losers in the afternoon list.

Why did Sensex today rebound?
US September non-farm payrolls rose by only 29,000 against expectations near 90,000, and unemployment edged up to 4.2%, according to the same market reports. That reduced the odds of an October Fed rate hike and supported risk appetite in emerging markets, including India.
Domestic investors still have the RBI’s policy decision on Wednesday, 7 October, on their calendar. Our RBI policy preview sets out the meeting dates. Foreign portfolio selling in September is covered in our FPI selling report.
Rupee and the week ahead
The Hindu reported the rupee closed 5 paise weaker at 96.30 against the US dollar on Monday. A softer rupee raises the landed cost of oil and gold even when dollar prices are steady, which matters for the dollar-rupee reader and for anyone watching bullion.
Still open after today’s close:
- Whether Tuesday’s session holds Monday’s gains ahead of the RBI announcement.
- How much of Monday’s bounce was short-covering after eight weak weeks, which the wrap does not break out.
- Wednesday’s repo-rate decision and the accompanying statement on inflation.
Banking names were mixed: Bajaj Finance gained while HDFC Bank slipped, even as broker notes discussed the RBI’s approval of Anup Bagchi as the bank’s next MD and CEO. SIP investors who buy the index through funds see the day’s move in their NAV with a one-day lag.
Sector colour on a rebound day
Financials led parts of the bounce — Bajaj Finance featured on both Sensex and Nifty gainer lists — while IT names such as HCL Tech and Infosys weighed on the indices. That mix matches a day driven more by global rate expectations than by a broad domestic earnings surprise. Q2 FY27 results season is only beginning; TCS is among the larger names due later in the week, per market calendars.
Volume and FPI data for Monday’s session were not in the closing wrap we used. September’s heavy FPI selling remains the background; one strong day does not reverse a month of outflows. Domestic institutions have been on the other side of that trade for much of 2026.
For anyone reading Sensex today as a SIP investor in a Nifty 50 index fund, Monday’s close simply becomes one more NAV print. The useful question is whether your emergency fund and loan EMIs are comfortable if volatility continues into the RBI announcement, not whether 472 Sensex points “prove” a bottom.
How to read one day against the year
Foreign portfolio investors sold heavily through September, as our FPI piece documented, and the rupee has been soft near 96. A single Monday bounce after soft US payrolls sits inside that larger tape. Domestic mutual fund SIP books have remained sturdy even on weak sessions, which is why index NAVs and FPI flows often diverge day to day.
Breath of the advance matters for traders more than for SIP investors. When a handful of heavyweights carry the Sensex while midcaps stay weak, equal-weight portfolios feel different from Sensex index funds. Monday’s wrap did not publish advance-decline totals, so treat leadership comments as qualitative.
Oil near $102 keeps the imported-inflation channel open into Wednesday’s policy. That is one reason markets may stay jumpy even after a green close. Position sizing and loan buffers matter more than predicting Tuesday’s open.
FAQs
Did the Sensex hit a new high?
No. Monday’s close at 72,382.47 was a one-day rebound after weeks of losses, not a fresh record in the reports cited.
What time is the RBI policy on 7 October?
The RBI is scheduled to announce the decision at 10:00 AM IST on Wednesday, 7 October, with the Governor’s press conference later the same day, per the published MPC calendar.
Should I change my SIP after one strong day?
A single session does not change the case for or against a long-term SIP. See our earlier guide on stopping a SIP in a falling market for the decision framework.
